You often hear people talking about the brain and the mind.
Are they the same thing? Well yes – and no.
First the science part!
Many doctors and scientists now believe that your emotions are controlled by a part of your brain called the Prefrontal Cortex.
It’s part of your brain’s frontal lobe.
It’s widely believed there is an integral link between your personality and the functions of the prefrontal cortex.
This brain region has also been implicated in planning complex cognitive behaviour, personality expression, decision-making, social behaviour, and certain aspects of speech and language.
The basic activity of this brain region is considered to be the arrangement of thoughts and actions in accordance with internal goals.
In other words: The prefrontal cortex is where your mind resides.
This is the thinking part of your brain.
While you cannot control many of the functions of your brain (things like your breathing and your heartbeat are performed automatically), you CAN learnt to control your thoughts and behaviours.
Think of your brain as the supercomputer that controls your body, and your mind as the software that runs on it.
Just like any software, your mind can be reprogrammed to make your brain function differently.
It can literally be a case of mind over matter.
Your mind also takes in information from the rest of your body – your sense of smell, taste and touch.
So your mind is part of your brain, but it’s also more than just your brain.
Your mind is what makes you who you are – for good or ill.
