Are you interested in gardening, but don’t have much room outside?
If so, starting an indoor garden is a great idea.
This might be on your porch or balcony, or right in your kitchen.
Here are some tips for growing plants and herbs indoors.
Use Less Water Than You Think You Need
When you are growing plants or food indoors, it typically needs less water than if it were growing outside.
This is definitely something to keep in mind when you are growing plants or vegetables indoors, regardless of what method you are using.
You don’t want to kill your plants just because you watered them too much.
Consider the weather and environment are different indoors, and with containers, the water is much easier to control, so you need less in general.
For watering, always look closely at how much water each different type of plant needs, and look for specific instructions for indoor or container gardening.
Make Sure You Have the Right Containers
Indoor gardening is all about using containers, unless you decided to start a hydroponic garden.
It is crucial that you get the right containers for what you are growing, and considering how much space you have.
This is where research comes in handy when using containers for indoor gardens.
One container is not necessary going to be useful for every type of plant.
Another reason they are important is because different plants need different types of soil, different space in the containers, and different depth of soil.
Some need much more soil in them, like potatoes and carrots.
While others only a few inches, such as spinach or other types of lettuce.
Consider How Much Space You Have
Speaking of space, you really need to consider where you will be growing your plants indoors before deciding what you have room for.
While most vegetables can be grown indoors in a container, some just need a little too much space to make it suitable.
This includes tomatoes, which can be grown in containers, but often grow too big to fit indoors.
Look for dwarf varieties of vegetables whenever possible as these will be smaller.
When in doubt, read the instructions for each plant and look for special instructions for indoor gardening.
If you notice that one of your plants is growing a bit too much for its container, you should be able to transplant it to a larger one or bring it outside.
Get the Children Involved
Children can have lots of fun filling the containers with soil or compost, planting the seeds, and watering the plants as they grow.
You can talk about the different size and shapes of the seeds too, and have fun guessing what each seed will grow into.
You could also give them a small pot of seeds of their own to grow in their bedroom; something like cress grows very quickly so they can see the development from seeds to plants in just a few days.
Try beginning with a few herbs if you’ve never tried growing your own food before.
They take up little space and small plants can be bought easily and cheaply from supermarkets or garden centres if you don’t want to wait for them to grow from seed.
